The first Systems Biology and Systems Medicine School will take place in Como at the Lake Como School of Advanced Studies created under the auspices of the University of Milan, University of Milano – Bicocca, University of Pavia and University of Insubria, and with the patronage of the Italian National Academy of Sciences and the University of Amsterdam. The course will be held from September 21st to September 27th, 2014. Registrations are open. Life Sciences are undergoing a revolution. Genomics and post-genomics enable us to describe biological processes comprehensively at various levels (e.g. the genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome ones) and are giving rise to a new paradigm, namely that biological functions can be understood on the basis of the various molecular players. This new paradigm is Systems Biology.Systems Biology is going to have a great impact on Medicine, as it addresses our multi-factorial diseases, such as cancer, metabolic syndrome and neurodegeneration, in terms of the molecules engaged in the corresponding networks. It will be possible to use new combinations of existing drugs on a personalized basis: one man, one model; one man, one therapy. In similar ways, industrial processes will become more predictable, precise, robust and competitive, and will eventually enable synthetic biology.
