The Academy Medals for 2016

The engagement is for November 15th, 2016 when the second annual assembly of the Academy members will take place. After the welcome address of the President Emilia Chiancone at 10.30 am, the newly appointed members Carlo Barbante and Giuseppe Scarascia Mugnozza will give their induction talk.

Carlo Barbante, professor of Analytical Chemistry at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, will discuss on ‘The memory of ice’; Giuseppe Scarascia Mugnozza, professor of Silviculture and Forest Ecophysiology, will talk about ‘Bioeconomy and forest resources: perspectives, problems and research opportunities’.

The Academy Medals for 2016

The National Academy of Sciences called of the XL has assigned the 2016 Medals. Professor Maria Agostina Vivaldi of Sapienza University of Rome was awarded the Medal of the XL for Mathematics in view of the innovative contribution and the theoretical and practical significance of her work on differential equations and and integro-differential equations which she studied accurately also from the numerical viewpoint.

The Medal of the XL for Physical and Natural Sciences was awarded to prof. Vincenzo Di Marzo, director of Biomolecular Chemistry Institute of the National Research Council (ICB-CNR), for his pioneering studies on endocannabinoid and endovanilloid systems that allowed the identification of the respective roles in multiple functions of our organism, thereby setting the basis for the design and synthesis of potential drugs for the treatment of chronic pain, stress, obesity, multiple sclerosis, and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Adalberto Giazotto of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) was the recipient of the Matteucci Medal for his pioneering contribution to the development of gravitational waves detectors based on laser interferometry.
