On the occasion of the centenary of the Great World War, the conference proposes a survey on the special characteristics acquired during the conflict by scientific research in relation to military requirements and to the industrial and civil deployment. After the first months of the War, all countries realized that only well-organized research activities and newly established relationships between scientific research and industrial production could provide an effective answer to the novel needs armies were confronted with. In particular, the public opinion of the Alliance was struck especially by Germany’s initial apparent technological supremacy. The sequence of events that took place in France, Great Britain and Italy and the preparations for war undertaken in the United States delineated a new model for the organization of research that was transferred to the post-war period.

The conference is promoted by the: National Academy of Sciences called of the XL, National Research Council, Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna, Italian Society of History of Sciences, Group of Fundaments and History of Chemistry, Center PRISTEM of Bocconi University.
