On November 13, 2003 The Academy awarded the XL Gold Medal to Ernesto Qualiariello, who has been Rector of the University of Bari and Chair of the National Research Council, for his fundamental contribution in scientific, technical, and cultural progress in Italy.

The ceremony took place in Naples at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station.
