The Matteucci Medal was establish to awards prizes to Italian and foreign physicists for fundamental contributions to the progress of science. Under Royal Decree dated July 10, 1870, the Italian Society of Sciences was authorised to receive the donation from senator Prof. Carlo Matteucci for the establishment of the Prize.
